Move More Jersey walkers can put their best feet forward again!

Thursday 2 July 2020

Move More Jersey are delighted their Health Walks can recommence again on Monday 6 July, following the period of lockdown.

Regular walkers on the programme have been very keen to see the guided walks start back again and it is hoped that new walkers will join the walks as the island eases out of restrictions.

Many islanders seem to have been finding the joy of exercising more during the last few months, but for some the Move More Health Walks offer more than just a form of exercise – they provide an opportunity to socialise whilst keeping fit – walkers enjoy meeting up and having a chat as they walk.

Move More Health Walks are easy, short walks designed to improve mental and physical wellbeing and provide the opportunity for support and encouragement to walk, especially for those with lower physical ability or who may have a long-term health condition. Each is free of charge and led by fully trained and friendly volunteer walk leaders, who provide a supportive environment for people to get started with exercising.

Emma Sterry, Move More Walk, Run & Cycle Officer explained, “our Health Walks have been created for people with varying levels of fitness and range in length from about 30 to 75 minutes of walking. People should start to feel themselves breathing a little faster, feeling a little warmer should feel their heart beating a little faster – but they should also feel comfortable and able to talk at the same time.”

A variety of walks at different levels, starting at various points across the island, are available from the month of July –social distancing and procedures which follow the guidance from the Government of Jersey will be implemented on each of the walks, in line with the prevention of COVID-19.

Cirsty de Gruchy, Head of Move More Jersey said, “we’re absolutely delighted to get our Health Walks back on the road again and have made some changes to our walking timetable and booking process, to ensure everyone’s health and safety at this time.

Our Level 1 Health Walks are taken at a slow pace and so are suitable for those who sometimes have difficulty walking or get out of breath easily – there really is a walk to suit everyone.”

New walkers are kindly asked to complete a health questionnaire when registering for the programme and all walkers are reminded to please book their walks online in advance.
