Islanders encouraged to take part in RED January and beat the winter blues!

Tuesday 11 January 2022

Move More Jersey are teaming up with Mind Jersey throughout January to encourage islanders to kick-start their new year in a positive way and take part in RED January, to keep active and help raise money for the local mental health charity.

Islanders are being reminded of the mental health benefits associated with exercising and moving more- whether choosing to walk, run, swim, cycle or take part in their favourite fitness activity during January, to beat the winter blues away. Exercise is good for your physical health and great for your mental health too – it can help boost your mood and self-esteem. And by moving more each day, you will start to increase your physical health, which in turn will help to build up your immunity to help you fight against common colds and viruses.

The aim of the community movement, RED January, is to set your exercise goal for the month, make a donation to Mind Jersey and enjoy support from Move More Jersey every step, splash and pedal of the way! The initiative encourages people to support their mental health and wellbeing by building movement into their daily lives. Adding a short wellbeing activity into your daily routine will help to keep you feeling a little better in body and mind.

Hugo Forrester, Operations Manager at Mind Jersey said, “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Jersey Sport again this year to promote RED January, and we are grateful that they have chosen to support Mind Jersey through any donations made.

January is a great time of year to kick start the new year and introduce some small manageable changes to your daily routine that can have huge positive effects on our mental health.  It is proven that in many cases exercise can combat the symptoms of mild-moderate depression as effectively as anti-depressants.  We strongly believe in exercise being one of the key elements to maintaining wellbeing and sustaining good mental health – that doesn’t mean you have to go out and run a marathon, it means getting into the fresh air, moving your body, and doing something you enjoy, whatever that may be.”

Feel good for taking part in RED January, for increasing your fitness and for supporting Mind Jersey!

Cirsty de Gruchy, Head of Move More Jersey said, ”There are so many benefits to keeping active and moving more. Exercise, no matter what, is not only good for your physical health, it’s good for your mental health too. Getting outside in the fresh air brings with it many health benefits for your body and mind – it can help to improve your mood, your self-esteem and will give you a sense of achievement. We’d love to see as many islanders as possible taking part in regular exercise, whatever the season – which will in turn benefit their mental health. Please join in the RED January movement and donate to Mind Jersey.

And don’t forget – the Move More Jersey team are here to support you – so if you’re unsure where to start, please just get in touch with us at: movemore@jerseysport.je or call us on 01534 757700.”
